Vikings Snap Northside's Streak, Win 24-7! Lowndes High’s defense answered its coach’s call at halftime and shut down Northside Warner Robins in the third and fourth quarters, enabling the Vikings to come away with a 24-7 victory, snapping the Eagles’ 35-game winning streak. The No. 2 Eagles (5-1, 2-1 in Region 1-AAAAA) moved the ball against No. 1 Lowndes (6-0, 3-0) in the first half, compiling a total of 121 yards, but managed just 31 in the second. “They were driving the ball on us in the first half and pushing us around up front,” Lowndes head coach Randy McPherson said. “But in the second half, wow what a half.” The Vikings held Northside’s passing game at bay most of the night, but still allowed Eagles running back Xavier Bacon to pick up big yards in the first half. The Vikings’ defensive line then stepped up, stuffing the running back behind the line of scrimmage four times. On the Eagles’ first series of the fourth quarter, Lowndes defensive end Telvin Smith picked up all three of the defensive plays, stuffing the play each time. On first-and-10 from the Eagles’ 27-yard line, Smith hit Bacon 1 yard behind the line of scrimmage, and followed suit with another tackle on Bacon, this time for a loss of 3 yards. Smith then grabbed a tipped ball out of the hand of Northside quarterback Joe Scott for an interception. Lowndes took over on Northside’s 31-yard line, and drove the ball in for the final touchdown of the night. Lowndes rushed the ball five times, overcoming two penalties totaling 15 yards, and scored on an 18-yard touchdown run by Tyler Hunter. |
