Lowndes vs. Coffee - Game Report
Lowndes started the game with a steady drive downfield. Doug Belk took the option and got the ball to the six-yard line, where Lynn Williams dashed into the endzone for the first score of the night. After the Viking defense held Coffee, they were forced to punt. Stevie Harden blocked the punt, which bounced out of the endzone, giving Lowndes a safety. Following the safety, Darriett Perry returned the kickoff 42-yards, setting up the next Viking score. Belk threw a beautiful long pass to Robert Frazier, who grabbed it for the touchdown. Belk then ran in the 2-pt conversion, making the score 17-0 in the 1 st quarter.
Early in the second, Perry streaked downfield to the two-yard line. Stanley Dickson slammed through the Trojans for the final two yards, and Kurtis Schimdt made another PAT, bringing the score to 24-0. On the next Viking drive, Dickson’s 10-yard TD reception was called back, forcing Schimdt to boot his 27-yard field goal to close out the half with 27-0 on the board.
On Coffee’s first drive of the second half, their quarterback threw a pitch to nowhere, which Jack Schroepher picked up at the 23. On the Viking’s first play, Williams shot around the right side for the touchdown. The rest of the third was a defensive stuggle, but Lowndes scored again in the final quarter, on a defensive play. Schroepher sacked the Coffee quarterback, stripping the ball in the process. Devaris “Bus” Leonard picked up the loose ball and lumbered in for the touchdown. Marc Herring missed the PAT, so the Vikings gained a 40-0 lead.
Against the JV and 9 th grade defense, Coffee quickly drove downfield. The Trojans scored a TD off of a 1-yard run, but the PAT was blocked by the outstanding Viking special teams. The Trojans then kicked and recovered an onside kick, but the starting Viking defense returned to the field, and they held strong. Harden picked off a Coffee halfback pass, ending their drive, giving Lowndes the 40-6 win.
