Lowndes vs. Houston - Game Report
The Vikings dominated the Houston County Bears Saturday night, winning 38-0, for their second straight Region 1-AAAAA Championship. This gave Lowndes High their first consecutive region titles and their third title in five years. Lowndes drove away on the ground against Houston, averaging more than 7.5 yards per carry on the night, en route to their five rushing touchdowns. The defense swarmed the Bear offense, holding them to only five first downs in the Vikings’ fifth shutout of the season.

On the first play of the game, the Vikings gave the crowd a scare with a fumble. Houston did recover at the Viking 35, but the Lowndes defense held strong. John Barner picked off the Houston QB at the 15-yard line, and returned the ball to the fifty. Just a few plays later, Devaris Leonard thundered into the endzone from the eleven-yard line, giving Lowndes their first score of the night. Kurtis Schimdt completed his first of four PAT’s, giving Lowndes the 7-0 lead.

For the next score, Lowndes used its trio of running backs to gain yardage, with Lynn Williams gaining 16 yards, Darriett Perry dashing 15 yards, and Stanley Dixon punching through for four. With triple-wideouts on the left, Doug Belk swept around the right end for a 19-yard touchdown with 3:19 in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Dickson broke loose for two colossal gains, one for 27 yards and a 28-yarder. Williams then took the pigskin in the 10 final yards to its destination, the Houston endzone. Later in the half, Perry capped off another long drive with a 2-yard smash into the endzone making the score at the half 28-0.

Early in the second half, Houston missed a pitch to their running back. Jack Schroepher pounced on the loose ball, giving Lowndes possession on the Houston eight. While the Vikings couldn’t manage a touchdown, Schimdt did put points on the board with his 24-yard field goal. Houston received the ball, but fumbled it once more. Barner picked it up, giving the Viking reserves the ball on the 49. Although the offense was held at first, a roughing the punter penalty continued the Lowndes drive. Jawon Smith dashed in for the touchdown, and Marc Herring kicked the PAT, to give the Vikings the 38-0 win.
