Lowndes Conquers Colquitt in 41-14 Victory
Alex Rowell, LowndesFootball.com

The weather couldn’t stop the Lowndes/Colquitt game Friday night for long, and the Packers couldn’t stop the Vikings either. Lowndes powered their way on the ground to a 41-14 win at Martin Stadium.

Colquitt won the opening coin toss and elected to defer, so Lowndes got the ball first. Darriett Perry received the kick and dashed 85 yards downfield to the nine. Immediately after that, Greg Reid took the ball into the endzone for the first score of the night. Matt Rowland split the uprights for the 7-0 lead. The Packers couldn’t get far on the ground against Lowndes, so quarterback Channing Hudson took to the air. Reid picked off Hudson’s first throw of the night, giving Reid a Viking record for most interceptions in a season, eight. However, Lowndes couldn’t score on that drive.

Later in the first quarter, the Vikings struck again. Reid grabbed a pitch and ran the pigskin 44 yards for his second touchdown. Rowland’s kick was good. On Colquitt’s next possession, Orion Ponder fumbled a pass, and Lowndes’ Krys Brooks picked it up on the Colquitt 34. A few plays later Darriett Perry scored from 5 yards out, closing out the first quarter at 21-0.

During the second quarter the Vikings scored once more. Tavaris Williams capped off a 5-play LHS drive with a 17-yard touchdown run up the gut. During this explosive first half, Lowndes racked up 174 offensive yards.

The Packers attempted to mount a comeback. Hudson tossed a 27-yard touchdown pass early in the third, and the PAT was successful. On the next Packer possession, Vance Cruff took a Hudson pass 96 yards to the endzone, closing the gap to 28-14. A minute-and-a-half later, Reid scored his third touchdown of the night with a 35-yard touchdown rush.

Late in the third an amazing Viking play brought the crowd to their feet. Perry rolled around to the left side seven yards behind the line of scrimmage, about to be taken down by Packer defenders. He broke loose and sped to the left sideline. LHS quarterback Miehell Padgett delivered a crushing block to allow DP to pick up a 15-yard gain. Glisson finished off that drive and the night’s scoring with a 1-yard quarterback sneak. The 2-point conversion failed. The LHS defense held the Packers for the remainder of the game, and the Vikings notched a 41-14 region win over the Colquitt County Packers.
