Game Report - Lowndes vs Colquitt
The Lowndes Vikings opened their region schedule with a 31-0 shutout over Colquitt County. The Vikings got ahead early in the first quarter and never looked back. The Packers were held to only 54 yards of offense in the Vikings' dominating performance.
To start the 1st quarter, the Vikings drove down into Packer territory. Then on 4th and 9, Kurtis Schimdt was called into the game, making a 42-yard field goal with 7:58 to go in the quarter. On the next drive Lowndes got downfield on a 45-yard pass from Doug Belk to Byan Sermons. Davarius Leonard drove the final 5 yards to put the Vikings up 10-0. To finish off the 1st, Lynn Williams dashed in a 29-yard touchdown.
For the first drive of the 2nd quarter, Leonard smashed deep into Packer land for 35 yards. However, the drive ended on a fumble. The defense then held the Packers away from the endzone. Once the Vikings got the ball back, B.J. Wright caught a pass out of the backfield for a 10-yard TD with 1:44 to go, sending the Vikings up 24-0. When Colquitt tried to score on the Vikes, Antonio Townsend picked off the ball. With not much time on the clock, the Vikings attempted a field goal. Schmidt missed the kick, but the Vikings went into the locker room with a 24-0 lead.
Both defenses stiffened in the 3rd quarter . Neither Lowndes nor Colquitt scored any points. The two teams traded interceptions, with Jermel Demps making the pick for the Vikes.
In the 4th, Tavarus Carter recovered a Colquitt fumble on Colquitt's 45. The Vikings could not convert, but later in the quarter, Lowndes did take advantage of a Colquitt miscue. The Packers attempted a fake punt, but the snap was mishandled and fumbled. Wright picked up the ball and trucked into the endzone for his second score of the night.
Next week the Vikings will play in the Winnersville Classic against cross-town rival Valdosta. The Wildcats are 3-3 this year, and 0-1 in Region 1-AAAAA. The Vikings will be playing at the new Bazemore-Hyder Stadium. The 2004 Winnersville Classic has the makings of a great game.
