Lowndes vs. Sequoyah - Game Report
The Lowndes Vikings scored a convincing win over a determined Sequoyah team Friday night. After being stopped on the ground by Lowndes, Sequoyah went to the air in the second half, but the defense still held the Chiefs to 7 points. Scoring on their first possession for the 13th straight game, the Vikings found the endzone in every quarter.
In the first quarter the Vikings came out ready to play. On their first possession, they drove down field quickly, with a 21-yard Lynn Williams run and an 18-yard Doug Belk dash to the get the Vikes to the goaline. Devarious Leonard then finished the drive with a 2-yard smash into the endzone with 9:33 to go in the first. However, the PAT was moved back 5 yards on a procedure call and then missed. Both defenses buckled down after the score, allowing no more points in the quarter.
The second quarter was a lot like the first, with the Vikings scoring early and then the defenses controlling the field. Octavious Everett converted a crucial third-and-short at mid-field. On the next play Williams broke free for a 52-yard touchdown run. Leonard then twisted through the Chiefs for the two-point conversion. Sequoyah threatened to score, but the defense never broke, sending the Vikings into the locker room with a 14-0 lead.
Tensions heated up in the second half as the Viking defense laid some licks on the Sequoyah quarterback. The Viking defense shone in the third, holding the Chiefs to 3-and-out after recovering an LHS fumble on the Sequoyah 30. After the ensuing punt, Marlon Jones tore down the field for 18 yards, setting up a 41-yard Belk pass to tight end Matt Harper. Williams then sealed the deal with an 11-yard run to the endzone.
The Lowndes offensive machine took to the air for their final score, as Belk found Harper in the endzone for a 3-yard TD. Sequoyah avoided the shutout with an 80 yard drive against the Viking defensive reserves. The drive ended on an 11-yard touchdown pass from Tony Pastore to Austin Thomas.
The Vikings held Pastore to 141 yards passing, with most of that coming on the final drive. Lowndes rolled up over 300 yards rushing, and Belk ended the night with 70 passing yards.
