Game Report - Lowndes vs. Stephenson
Coach Randy McPherson scored his 100th win Friday night as the Vikings stunned Stephenson 43-7. Taking a narrow 14-7 lead into halftime, Lowndes finished the Jaguars off in the second half, scoring 29 unanswered points.
The Vikings extended their streak of scoring on their opening possession to 12 games with Lynn Williams breaking tackles down the sideline, scoring a 35 yard touchdown. The defense then held Stephenson, giving the Vikes great field position. Williams dashed for 28 yards, Darriet Perry streaked downfield for 9 yards, and Octavious Everett finished off the first quarter scoring with a 1 yard touchdown. Kurtis Schmidt’s PAT was good, giving the Vikings a 14-0 lead.
The Jaguars clawed back in the second quarter. In the defensive battle, the Jags found a Viking opening on 4th-and-7, completing a 39-yard pass into the redzone. Stephenson ended their drive with a 1-yard touchdown run for their only score of the night.
The defense frustrated Stephenson through the second half, and the Jags were forced to the air. In the third quarter, Tavarus Carter picked off a Stephenson pass, allowing Williams to run in yet another touchdown, this one for 20 yards. Lowndes reached the endzone again on the next drive, as Marlon Jones slipped through the defense for 37 yards, and Everett ended the drive with a 2-yard touchdown run. Lowndes threatened to score a third time in the third, when Williams sprinted downfield, gaining 49 yards, but the Vikings fumbled in the endzone for a Stephenson touchback.
In the final quarter, Lowndes kept the pressure on Stephenson. Everett tore through the defense, scoring on a 59-yard touchdown run. After starting at their own 20-yard line, Stephenson was pushed back by the Viking defense, and they were forced to punt out of the endzone. When the punter couldn’t handle the ball, Stevie Harden tackled him for a safety. Lowndes then ran their last scoring drive of the night, and Lee Green capped off the Vikings’ great game as he punched the ball through for the 1-yard touchdown. However, the PAT was not kicked due to a bad exchange on the snap.
Friday night Lynn Williams had a 200+ yard game as he scored two of the Vikings’ touchdowns. Octavious Everett also smoked the Jaguars for 100+ rushing yards and three touchdowns. Next week the Vikings will host Sequoyah in the third round of the playoffs, who defeated Marietta 17-14 in overtime this week.
