Scrimmage Report -- Lowndes vs. TCC
In Friday night's scrimmage, both schools' JV teams faced off in the first quarter. The Vikings came out ahead with a 3-0 win. Stanley Dixon darted down the field on a 32-yard run, setting up Marc Herring for his winning field goal with 43 seconds to go.
To start the varsity game, TCC pulled a long, steady drive, capped off by a 6-yard touchdown run by Philip Prather. The Vikings fought back, sending Octavius Everett on a 46 yard touchdown run from 4th and 1. The Vikings failed on the two-point conversion, so the second quarter (1st varsity quarter) score was 7-6 TCC.
The Vikings came back on the field on fire, scoring 20 points in the 3rd nine-minute long quarter. To start it off, Doug Belk ran 32 yards to set up Everett for his second touchdown run of the night, this one for 53 yards. This put the score at 12-7 LHS, after another missed 2-point attempt. Then the defense had a place to shine. While TCC was about on their 20-yard line, Matt Harper jarred the ball loose, and Jamel Demps ran it in for the touchdown. The Vikings got the extra point , setting the score at 19-7 LHS. After yet another TCC fumble, Lynn Williams finished off the 3rd quarter scoring explosion, with a 4-yard TD run, and LHS added the PAT.
In the 4th, Doug Belk threw a 40-yard deep pass to Bryan Sermons, who made an amazing diving catch. After Derrien Perry ran the ball 12 yards closer, Demps slashed in for the TD, and Marc Herring kicked the point after for a 33-7 lead. Then, with most of the starters on the bench, the defense still held firm. Although TCC's two-minute drill steadily drove down the field, the Viking defense shut them down in the final seconds.
The swarming LHS defense controlled the potent TCC offense all night, and LHS kicker Kurtis Schmidt wowed the crowd with several powerful kicks sailing into and through the end zone.
