2004 Game Report -- Lowndes vs. Ware
In Friday night's battle of the unbeatens, the Lowndes Vikings defeated Ware County 44-13. The Gators only scored 6 offensive points on the Vikings. While the defense contained Ware's potent offense, Lowndes' backs ran right through the Ware defense. This game was said to be the Vikings' first test, and they passed with flying colors.
To start the first quarter the Vikings came out strong as Lynn Williams drove down to the 22-yard line on several carries, and then Darriet Perry ran the 22 final yards for a TD. Then the defense shut down Ware on 4th down to get the ball on the LHS 34-yard line. Perry then darted 57 yards downfield, allowing Octavius Everett to score the 2-yard touchdown on the next play. On their next possession Lowndes steadily drove down the field. Doug Belk tossed a 19-yard pass to Matt Harper, who made a diving catch that brought the crowd to their feet. To finish off the first quarter, Belk ran in a 14-yard keeper.
In the second, both defenses played strong. Lowndes was able to drive to the 31-yard line, but then Kurtis Schimdt took over. He booted an amazing 47-yard field goal to put the score to 24-0.
In the 3rd Ware scored their first points of the night. Their special teams blocked a Lowndes punt, and then ran it back 28 yards for the touchdown. On the next play, the Gators then recovered their own kickoff at the Lowndes 19-yard line. After the Vikings moved Ware back some, the Gators scored their only offensive points on a 24-yard pass from Henry Chubb to Micheal Duncan, but missed the PAT.
Ware had closed to within 11 points, but then LHS fought back. Belk found an opening and sprinted 50 yards down to the Gator 5-yard line, and Williams took it in the rest of the way. Schmidt once more added the PAT. After the defense once again shut down the Gators, Lowndes put together their final third quarter drive. Williams set up the score with a 27-yard run, and then Marlon Jones bulldozed through Ware for the 8-yard TD. Schmidt's PAT was good.
In the 4th quarter the Vikings wrapped up the win. Tavarus Carter, who had his first-quarter interception called back on a roughing the passer penalty, picked off a Ware County pass at the LHS 10-yard line. Perry sped through the Gator defense on a 58-yard run into Ware territory. Then Marlon Jones and Lee Green took it from there, chewing their way down the field, with Jones scoring the final touchdown.
It was awesome to see Martin Stadium filled up Friday night. In all quarters you could hear shouts and cheers as each teams fans tried to out-do each other. With Sonny Purdue coming in the pre-game, the fans all game long, and the half-time bands, this game was a great Viking victory.
Lowndes will be off next week. After that they will play Colquitt County in Martin Stadium in the Vikings' first region game.
